Turn A Wooden Bowl

Using the Long Grind Bowl Gouge:

CLASS LEVEL: Beginning

 

LOCATION & DATE: All classes are at Johnson's Workbench, Charlotte MI location. By Appointment.

CLASS LEVEL: Beginning


CLASS SIZE: Three

COST: $200 plus $50 Materials Fee. Total $250. A deposit of $100 must be received before day of class.
We accept all forms of payment. Checks should be written to Johnson's Workbench.
Any refunds must be approved by the instructor, Ernie Schuette

PREREQUISITE: No previous turning experience is required.


BRING: All wood is supplied. If you have a chuck, please bring it to use in class. Bring a bowl gouge
if you have one, or you can either purchase or borrow one. If you plan to purchase a bowl gouge,
wait for class discussion to determine the correct bowl gouge to purchase. Students should wear
short sleeve’s (safety), bring a sack lunch (we discuss turning topics), and wear some form of
eye protection (regular glasses are fine.)


TOPICS COVERED: Experience a fun and rewarding way to learn the simple pleasures of wood turning.
Unlike many other woodworking projects, handsome turned wooden bowls can be made in a short amount
of time and prove both artful and functional.

 

This two-day class is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to turn a bowl from a block of wood.

Topics covered are: lathe and tool safety; how to obtain and prepare wood blanks; tool selection; sharpening;

various methods for mounting the blank on the lathe; how to push cut, pull cut, and shear (angel hair) cut with

the bowl gouge; sanding (power and hand) and finishing options.

 

The first day is focused on learning the cuts and how to manipulate the bowl blank on the lathe. The second day

is independently (with some guidance) making your bowl from start to finish. The long-grind bowl gouge cuts can

be so clean that sanding usually begins with 120 or 180 grit sandpaper.

 

LATHE TOOL SHARPENING:

PREREQUISITE: None
BRING: Your scrapers, gouges, and skews. Tools available for purchase day of class.
TOPICS COVERED: Basics of grinders, grinding wheel selection and setup, various jigs and their application

(with emphasis on the Wolverine Grinding System), specific techniques to sharpen scrapers, gouges, and skews.

 

 

ROUTER CLASS I:

INSTRUCTOR: Keith July

CLASS LEVEL: Beginning
CLASS LENGTH: 4 Hours
COST: $100
PREREQUISITE: None
Bring: A router and safety glasses. Tools available for purchase day of class.
TOPICS COVERED: This workshop covers the introduction to the fixed base and plunge router. Students will learn how to safely set up the router along with bit selection for various woodworking applications.

 

ROUTER CLASS II:

CLASS LEVEL: Beginning and Intermediate
CLASS LENGTH: 4 Hours
COST: $125
PREREQUISITE: None
BRING: Safety glasses, and tape measure
TOPICS COVERED: This workshop will cover the many uses of the router table. The students will learn to set up the router table for many woodworking applications including cutting dado and rabbets.

 

WOOD TURNING GUILD MEETINGS:

LOCATION & DATE: Johnson's Workbench, Charlotte MI location. The first Saturday of each month, September through

May. Guild does not meet in June, July and August. For more details call 800-292-5937 ext: 313.

TOPICS COVERED: A great opportunity to share ideas, and tips for wood turning projects.
